Quick guide: A desktop that powers on without a picture can have a monitor, cable, memory, graphics, power or motherboard fault. A black screen alone does not prove that the motherboard needs replacement. Start with external checks and ask for diagnosis before approving a board-level repair.
Check the monitor and signal path
Confirm the monitor is powered on, set to the correct input, and connected to the desktop’s active video output. If available, test a known-good cable or monitor. A loose cable or wrong input can look like a computer failure.
Disconnect non-essential USB devices and try one normal restart. Note whether fans spin, diagnostic lights appear or the system makes beep patterns. Stop if you smell burning, hear unusual electrical noise or see liquid damage.
Separate no-power from no-display
No power means the desktop shows no expected lights or fan activity. No display means some power signs are present but no usable picture appears. These symptoms need different tests. A technician may check memory, graphics output, power delivery and motherboard signals before recommending a repair.
Do not open a power-supply unit; it can retain a dangerous charge after unplugging. Ask for the test result, repair options, data risks and estimate before work begins.
What to share when booking
- Desktop make/model and any recent upgrade or power event.
- Whether fans, lights or beep codes appear.
- Whether another monitor or cable changes the symptom.
- Any liquid spill, transport damage or previous repair.
Customer reviews mention desktop motherboard and no-display jobs. These are individual reports and do not mean another computer has the same fault.
